Is removing shoes to use a school computer lab common?

During my school years, We had to remove our shoes if they were muddy/dirty/soiled at the entrance of the computer labs. .Iam a freshman in college and they have the same rules. Is this common? Are computer labs that sensative?

Is removing shoes to use a school computer lab common?
I have never seen a shoe removal sign at a computer lab. I have seen not to bring food or drinks inside
Reply:noways..........then your school is bad.........in older days these rules were followed but not now
Reply:I have never heard of that! Were your computer labs in Japan, by chance? Were your professors neat freaks? I've taught in 6 different schools and no one has ever asked anyone to remove their shoes! What if there was a fire drill?? That's funny.
Reply:Yes it is common.
Reply:That's interesting. I've never heard that before. It kind of makes sense in trying to cut down on dust getting into the computers, but I don't see being so obsessive compulsive about it.
Reply:Is there carpet? If so, maybe that's why. Or maybe they're cutting back on the custodial services.
Reply:They don't do that at my school. Gross. Maybe they should invest in matts to wipe your feet. Aren't you scared someone will steal your shoes?
Reply:I used to remove shoes when I was in college but the number of computer rooms need this are reducing. It was due to the fact that old big machines had lot of open parts and are delicate like disk memory, so dust does affect them.
Reply:That is just flat out ridiculous! Your paying them to go there, so I would tell them to 5uck off and slob on your knob like corn on the cob
Reply:well. the closest thing that i have seen that happen was in highschool. It was raining and a few classmates came in with shoes that were leaving trails. When we went to the library, the librian would not let them past the "book stealing alrma thing" until they were deshoed. However that sounds like that would be in a tech oriented type of school. meaning that it is probably more than just a school computer. they prolly put some bucks in it.
Reply:That's just freaky - Our computer labs are absolutely disgusting. Must be a really freaky computer administrator or perfectionist? Definitely not common
Reply:Yes, in India even now students remove their shoes before entering a computer labs.
Reply:I found it was more the static electricity build-up than the condition of the shoes.
Reply:um thats wierd never heard of it..but smart.
Reply:i never had those rules in my school, only when you come in the house in some houses. it is not necessary but it will be respectful to do so.
Reply:baba booey
Reply:No. In 1986 I watched a Hollywood movie "The Great Wall". In the movie Chinese professors were removing their shoes before using the PC's. The audience laughed lot. This shows that even in 1986 removing shoes before using a PC was a comedy material.
